| M.L. : Well with an Arista contarct things went better, right? Terry: Right, after we signed with Arista many good things started to happen. We signed with Jack Nelson & Associates who managed QUEEN. We started playing all over the place and things were looking good once again. Being part of the "Big Time" means having to compremise sometimes, so when we were told that Harry Maslin (David Bowies' " Fame ') was going to produce the album, we all said OK. Neil was "Out" and Harry was" In". Another little decision that looked good on the surface, but would be another blunder on our part. Neil new us, he new what we were all about. Not so Harry. When we finally started the album at Cherokee Studios. things were obviously not going to go well. Without Neils musical leadership, Mark started to take over the session on his own. Harry would sit and watch as mark would re-arrange all our songs. This was hell, and it started to show in the performances. We had lost the magic that had taken years to develope. The album was released with our single "All the Kids On The Street". We went on the West Coast part or the KINKS "Sleepwalker" Tour. After we got back from the tour there was to much tension between Mark and the rest of us. Soon after our return, Mark quit.. M.L. : Oh.no.. Terry : You think I would have jumped off a bridge by now right? Well I Started working as a door man at the Whisky a-Go-Go(that was the next best thing) . It was a humbling experience, but at least I was around music all the time. I met up with Jeff Rollings, Billy Reed and Robert Blessus to form the "Strangers". That group sounded great, but with no money it was tough to keep it all together. John Anderson, Jeff Rollings and myself tried it again as the" the King St Dukes" playing all the clubs. Madame Wongs, Club 88, Hong Kong Cafe, the Whisky and the Golden Bear, but all the guys split and went different directions. M.L. : But that wasn't just the end of your musical carrer! Terry: The Automatix, Joy Rider & Avis Davis. and the Sales Brothers were also short time adventures I got into before I gave up on it. I wouldn't change anything except the success part. Of course success may have killed me too. Maybe everything happens for a reason Can't say I didn't try! |
