| ( M.L : Which was the first big time show you've played? Terry: The Countdown 65 shows. We were successful for awhile on the "Big Band Bash". Countdown 65' which pitted fifty or so bands against each other for a record contract. like "Star Search" or something. I never herd if anyone ever won. we didn't. Many of the important people in my life today were there playing at Countdown 65'. M.L : How did you meet the Palace Guard? Terry: When the Driftonesfinally got good enough to play in Hollywood.we played the Hullabaloo Club. That's when I met up with the Palace Guard. Danny Hortter introduced me. They were the house band and they sounded great .I didn't know it at the time. but their drummer. Emitt Rhodes was planning on leaving to start his new band. The Merry-Go-Round. and they were looking for a drummer. M.L. : And there you go... Terry: Right .as fate would have it. I ended up with the gig. and becoming the new drummer for the Palace Guard. It was a good thing I had learned all those Beatles songs because I had to learn a whole lot of their songs in a few days. The Guard was playing big time shows and TV. so that pushed me to a new level. They had already recorded a few songs ."Falling Sugar" and "All Night Long". that were being played on the radio. so we were like the local "Fave Rave" to a lot of people. M.L. : What about the famous 60's hysteria at the gigs? Terry: The day we did an outside concert at the opening of a new "White Front" store was right out of "A Hard Days Night". I mean if you have never had a mob of people running after you. trying to rip your clothes off. then you haven't lived! This thing got totally out of controL we were lucky we weren't trampled to death. It took about twenty cops just to get us in the car. so we could leave. It was wild. John had some of his hair pulled out and Dave had his uniform ripped. It's funny to think of us all running through the isles "Excuse me K-Mart shoppers"! M.L. : What happened later on? Did you tour with the band? Terry: We recorded "Greed". "Calliope". "Party Lights" and "Saturdays Child". We toured the USA and Canada L s' East coast before it all came to a halt in 1968. Now terry was on a hunt for a new bands. Terry: I had seen a guy playing in a band called "Sleepy Hollow" during Countdown 65. His name was Mike McCarty. I thought he was talented and would be a good guy to work with. He ended up being in one of my classes in high schooL good old Pacific Shores. We later hooked up with James Rolleston (bass) and Wolf Marshall (lead Guitar) to form a band called "SWEET WINE". Wolf had the ability to listen to a song and play it note for note. We played the strip night clubs doing Blues Breakers, Cream. Stones. Buffalo Springfield and Moby Grape songs. We never got a record deal and broke up after about two years. James. Wolf and Mike all became successful in later musical projects. We are all still close friends. Go to page~ 3 |
